Susan Mae POLK

Polk testified that Felix punched her three times in the face, rubbed pepper spray in her eyes
and dragged her to the ground before unsuccessfully stabbing at her with the knife.
Prosecutors suggest that her minor physical injuries — red discolorations around her
eyes, a welt on her shoulder and bite marks to her hand — disprove her claim that
her husband was the aggressor.

"I have the knife! I have the knife!" Polk told jurors she warned her husband after she grabbed the 4-inch
paring knife from his grib and before she stabbed him. The kitchen utensil, she said, was "everyone's
favorite." And so she washed it, dried it and put it back in the kitchen drawer after stabbing her husband
27 times with it, she said, in an attempt to bring return to normalcy after a traumatic experience.
She turned it over to her former attorney who gave it to investigators in April 2005
while Polk was briefly out on bail.

Polk claims Contra Costa County authorities doctored the crime scene to try to make
an act of self defense look like an act of cold-blooded murder. She has also accused
detectives of pouring water on her husband's body to make the dried blood appear
wet. Prosecutors say the accusations are baseless.

Detectives say they found Susan's footprints and hair at the crime scene. Strands of her hair were also
found in Felix's hands. A forensic pathologist testified that Polk had defensive wounds on his arms,
hands, and feet; numerous stab wounds to his chest, including a 5 1/2-inch wound that punctured
his lung; and a laceration to his head that appeared to be the result of blunt-force trauma.
