Artist Nigel Thomson had a reputation for
shocking and controversial subjects. His Graeme Thorne series
dealt with the kidnap and murder of the 8-year-old son of the family
that won the first Opera House Lottery in 1960. For Thomson, the
incident represents nothing less than Australia’s ‘loss of innocence’.
It was the first time the nation had succumbed to the large-scale
gambling craze of the lottery. It was the first time the
disappearance of a child had dominated the media for weeks on end.
Australia, it seemed, was no longer a safe and secure place.
