A then-12-year-old Fernandez was initially arrested following the March 2011 death of his
2-year-old half-brother. Authorities say Fernandez had been home alone with the toddler
when he suffered a fractured skull, bruising to his left eye and a bleeding brain. The boys'
mother, Biannela Susana, waited more than eight hours to take the injured child to the
hospital, where he died. The mother pleaded guilty to manslaughter last year.

Biannela Susana, the mother of 13-year-old Jacksonville murder defendant Cristian Fernandez, enters
the courtroom after conferring with her attorney in the jury room. Susana pleaded guilty this morning
 to aggravated manslaughter in death of her 2-year-old son. The guilty plea came during a pre-trial
hearing that was suddenly changed from next week to this morning before Circuit Judge James H.
Daniel, with prosecutor Mark Caliel and defense attorney Shawn Arnold present. The hearing was
in the Duval County Courthouse on Wednesday March 28, 2012.
