An elderly Shrewsbury man charged with killing his wife and eating part of her severed arm died Saturday at a public hospital specializing in mental illness, a representative of the Worcester County sheriff’s office said.

Jieming Liu, 79, died of natural causes in a secure section of Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Boston, said Jason Rives, a spokesman for Sheriff Lewis Evangelidis. While Shattuck has its own security, the sheriff’s office had decided to post its own guard there around the clock as an extra precaution.

Additional information about Liu’s health was not immediately available, but the Chinese immigrant had been transferred from Bridgewater State Hospital after staff there determined that Liu’s medical needs were beyond their capacity, Rives said.

“When an inmate goes to Shattuck, there are typically some serious medical problems,” Rives said. A supervisor at Shattuck declined comment.

During Liu’s arraignment last month in Westborough District Court, he appeared confused, and his son told investigators he suspected the older man was suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Liu’s wife, 73-year-old Yuee Zhou, was found by the couple’s son face-down at home in a pool of blood April 5. When officers arrived, they found Liu covered in blood and Zhou’s left arm served and partially gnawed. A murder weapon was not found.

After his arraignment, Liu was sent to Bridgewater for a mental evaluation to determine his competency for trial. It’s not clear if that occurred before he was transferred, Rives said, with Shattuck unlikely to have followed up because of Liu’s medical state.

While an autopsy on Zhou was planned after Liu’s arrest to determine her cause of death, it was not clear yesterday if the exam has been completed or will proceed.

Man accused of killing wife, eating her flesh acted in ‘self-defense’

Jieming Liu's wife's blood-soaked body was found on a bedroom floor, with flesh missing from her left forearm

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — A 79-year-old man accused of killing his wife ate some of her flesh and was found sitting in a rocking chair in their Shrewsbury apartment, covered in blood, a prosecutor said Friday.

Jieming Liu was charged at his arraignment Friday with the murder of Yuee Zhou, 73.

Liu appeared disoriented and was wearing a white jumpsuit with no shoes during the appearance in Westborough District Court in Westborough, just east of Shrewsbury. He was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation to determine his competency to stand trial.

His attorney, Michael Hussey, later described him as "befuddled" and in "pathetic" mental and physical condition.

In court, Worcester County prosecutor Michael McHugh said the couple's son called police to his parents' apartment on Thursday night. Police found Liu in a rocking chair with blood on his mouth, hands and face. His wife's blood-soaked body was found on a bedroom floor, with flesh missing from her left forearm. Some of her fingers were detached from her hand, McHugh said.

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early told reporters, "It was a very gruesome scene."

Liu told Shrewsbury police that he acted in self-defense.

The couple's son told police his parents arrived from China in November. He said his mother was recently worried about the health of his father, who he thought may have Alzheimer's disease.

A frail 79-year-old man who recently emigrated from China pleaded not guilty yesterday in the brutal slaying of his elderly wife.

On Thursday, police in the quiet New England town of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts found Jieming Liu in a rocking chair ‘covered in blood’ on his hands, mouth, and face in his modest condominium.

According to police, his 73-year-old wife, Yuee Zhou, was found in a rear bedroom with severe injuries to her arm, lying in a pool of blood.

Liu’s son told police that his father – who is only 5ft2 and 75 pounds - had no idea of what he was doing at the time, and kept repeating: ‘This is not your mother.’

At the arraignment yesterday in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, Assistant District Attorney Michael D. McHugh told the court that police were notified around 4:30pm Thursday that a woman was not breathing.

When officers arrived to the condo, he said, officers found Liu drenched in blood and surrounded by pieces of his wife’s flesh.

Court records state he kept telling his son, ‘This is not your mother,’ in Mandarin Chinese.

He was charged with murder in conjunction with the gruesome death.

Mr McHugh told the court: 'He may have been eating her flesh.'

Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. also said that Zhou was missing most of the flesh on her badly-mutilated left arm. Police also found a few fingers scattered around the condo.

Mr Early called it a ‘very gruesome scene. A very tough scene’ it’s a very disturbing scene,' telegram.com reported.

According to the DA, Liu claimed that he was acting in self-defence.

His attorney, public defender Michael Hussey, told the court that he may be suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia.

He said: ‘Mr Liu doesn’t seem to have any recognition for what is going on here. He’s completely befuddled, I don’t even think that he has a good understanding that police brought him here and for what reason.’

According to the Boston Herald, Liu was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Mr Early told telegram.com that the couple had moved to the suburban New England town last year from China’s Hunan Province, and had been married for about 50 years.

Their son, 51, said he checked on them every day, and said he brought them to the U.S. so that they could receive better care, according to Mr Hussey. They also have a daughter in San Francisco.

Liu is next due in court May 14th.

Shrewsbury is about 50 miles west of Boston.

The quiet New England town has a population of 35,000, according to the 2010 census.
