Ivan MENDOZA
Youth, 15, Is Charged In Deaths of
2 Women
The New York
Times
April 22, 1982
A 15-year-old Manhattan boy
was indicted yesterday on charges of fatally
stabbing two elderly women during robberies at
their apartments, a spokesman for the District
Attorney's office said.
The boy, Ivan Mendoza of 712
West 175th Street, was charged with two counts
of felony murder and two of intentional murder
in the deaths of Lena Cronenberger and Lillian
Kong, according to Mary de Bourbon of the
District Attorney's office.
The Washington Heights teen-ager
was arrested Saturday, the day he is charged
with killing Miss Cronenberger, 88, who resided
in his building. The indictment also charged the
youth with murdering Miss Kong, 64, of 385 Fort
Washington Avenue, on March 20, 1981.
The boy, who is being held
without bail on Rikers Island, faces a maximum
prison sentence of 25 years to life if convicted.
Guilty in 2d Killing
The New York Times
June 7, 1983
A 17-year-old youth convicted last week of murdering
an elderly woman neighbor pleaded guilty yesterday to killing another
elderly woman.
The youth, Ivan Mendoza, of 712 West 175th Street in
Manhattan, admitted that he killed Louise Kong, 64, during a March 20,
1981, robbery, according to Justice Burton B. Roberts of State Supreme
Court in Manhattan. The youth was convicted last week of stabbing to
death Lena Cronenberger, 88, during a robbery on April 17, 1982.
Bargaining Over Murder
The New York Times
August 19, 1983
Two murders for the price of one - that's what the
courts seemed to allow Ivan Mendoza. A jury had found the arrogant 17-
year-old guilty of stabbing Lena Cronenberger, 88, to death with a
carving knife and fork, and the judge imposed the maximum for a juvenile,
nine years to life. But Mr. Mendoza was also charged with murdering 64-year-old
Louise Kong with a screwdriver, and for that the prosecutor made a deal.
In exchange for his admission of guilt he would get five years to life,
to be served concurrently - meaning no additional prison time.
