It took a chain of 4,200 runners--running one-kilometer
segments over 82 days--to deliver the Olympic torch across the U.S.
to Los Angeles. Just days before the Opening Ceremonies at the
Coliseum, O.J. Simpson carried the torch in Santa
Monica. The one-time USC star had retired from the NFL after the
1979 season, but he was still in the public spotlight as a
broadcaster. Jogging with Simpson (left) is Nicole Brown, who
would become his second wife in 1985. A decade later, Simpson
would be accused of murdering Brown and friend Ron Goldman, in
Brentwood. Photo dated: July 22, 1984.
Marcus Allen, upended by a Bruin defender. In
1981, Allen became the fourth Trojan running back to win the Heisman
Trophy, following Mike Garrett, O.J. Simpson, Anthony
Davis, and Charles White, by rushing for a record 2,342 yards. On
this day, with Allen gaining 219 yards, USC prevailed 22-21 as the
Trojans blocked a last-second field-goal attempt.

and Anthony Davis gathered together on the field at halftime of the
USC-UCLA game, the ex-Trojans represented 10,368 career rushing
yards among them. They are also the top three at USC. Davis is No. 1
with 3724, O. J. had 3423 and Garrett wound up with 3221.
