Carol Hatley gets prison in mom's dismemberment

ABC15.com

April 25, 2013

PHOENIX - A Phoenix woman accused of murdering and dismembering her mother has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 42-year-old Carol Hatley was sentenced Thursday after entering into a plea agreement for second-degree murder.

Phoenix police say 73-year-old Deborah Hatley was in the process of being dismembered at the home she shared with her daughter when officers arrived on the scene last July 30.

They say Carol Hatley didn't confess to killing her mother, but claimed she was wrapping her in plastic bags in order to take her to a hospital.

Officers reported finding large garbage bags that they believe she was planning to use to get rid of the body.

Police say the mother and daughter had a tumultuous relationship with a history of domestic incidents.

$1M bond set for woman accused of dismembering mother

A judge has set a $1 million bond for a woman accused of matricide.

Carol Ann Hatley, 42, was arrested on suspicion of second degree murder. Police said she stabbed her mother, Deborah Ann Hatley, 73, to death and began dismembering her Monday in the home they shared in the 12000 block of N. 47th Avenue near Cactus Road.

Hatley, who was drunk when officers arrived, gave inconsistent statements of what had happened to her mother and was "clearly deceptive" to investigators, according to a police report.

Initially, she told police she found her mother's body at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The neighbor who called 9-1-1 told police that Hatley alerted her of the mother's death at 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Hatley could not explain to police why she did not immediately call 9-1-1 when she found the body. She also admitted to police to "tampering with evidence."

She showed no remorse or emotions regarding the death of her mother, police said.

Hatley admitted to police she wrapped her mother in plastic bags and claimed "she was going to take her to the hospital."

Family members told police that Hatley was an alcoholic and had the potential for violence when drunk.

They also told police that the mother and daughter had a strained relationship. The daughter moved in with the mother 10 months ago, according to a police report.

Carol Hatley Accused of Murdering Her Mother and Partially Dismembering Her Before Just Telling a Neighbor to Call the Cops

By Matthew Hendley - PhoenixNewTimes.com

July 31, 2012

A 73-year-old Phoenix woman was murdered and in the process of being dismembered in her home Sunday, and police think her alcoholic daughter's the one who did it.

Phoenix police went to Deborah Hatley's house on the west side around 3 a.m. Monday, finding Hatley dead and "in the process of being dismembered," according to court documents obtained by New Times.

Her daughter, 42-year-old Carol Hatley, said she was the one who found her mother, and told her neighbor to call 9-1-1. The first problem with that -- Hatley told police she'd found her mother at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

According to the documents, Hatley told police that for the 7 1/2 hours between finding her mother's body and having her neighbor call the cops, she was tampering with the evidence.

She didn't have an explanation as to why she didn't immediately call police, and "showed no remorse or emotions related to the loss of her mother," the documents state.

"[Hatley] was extremely passive and did not express concern," according to a detective's probable-cause statement.

Hatley -- whom police say was intoxicated when they showed up -- admitted to wrapping her mother in plastic bags, as she told police she was about to bring her to the hospital, according to the documents.

The court documents say Hatley described her mother's injuries in "graphic detail" -- police say she had "obvious trauma to her body" -- and admitted to handling two weapons that were "left" at the scene of the crime.

A probable-cause statement notes that Hatley was inconsistent in her stories to police, and was "clearly deceptive to investigators."

The statement says Hatley's story didn't quite match up to what was found at the crime scene.

Hatley's family told police that she had an "alcohol dependency," and "had the potential for violence when intoxicated."

Hatley and her mother were the only ones who lived at the house -- near 49th Avenue and Cactus Road -- and there were no signs of forced entry, according to the documents.

Court documents note that police haven't responded to any previous incidents between Hatley and her mother, but family members told the cops they had a "strained relationship."

Hatley was jailed on one count of second-degree murder, and her bond was set at $1 million.

Carol Hatley Stabbed Her Mother to Death, According to Prosecutor

By Matthew Hendley - PhoenixNewTimes.com

July 31, 2012

Carol Hatley -- the daughter of 73-year-old Deborah Hatley, who was found dead and "in the process of being dismembered" yesterday morning -- stabbed her mother to death, according to a prosecutor.

During her initial court appearance (which can be viewed here), the prosecutor said he spoke with a detective who informed him that Deborah Hatley died from "multiple stab wounds."

Carol Hatley told police she found her mother dead around 7 p.m. on Sunday, and had a neighbor call police more than seven hours later, according to court documents obtained by New Times.

Hatley told police that for the 7 1/2 hours between finding her mother's body and having her neighbor call the cops, she was touching all the evidence.

She does not appear to have any criminal history in Arizona, according to court records.

Daughter pleads not guilty in Phoenix mom's murder, dismemberment

By Breann Bierman and Karla Navarrete - Kpho.com

July 30, 2012

A Phoenix woman arrested in connection with the murder and dismemberment of her mother has plead not guilty.

Phoenix police said they found the body of 73-year-old Deborah Hatley on July 30 at her home in the 12000 block of North 47th Avenue.

Sgt. Trent Crump said the victim had obvious trauma to her body and was "in the process of being dismembered."

Crump said the victim's daughter, Carol Hatley, 42, provided a statement to police and was arrested on one count of second-degree murder.

About 3:30 a.m., Carol Hatley went to neighbor Regina Martinez to call 911.

Martinez said, "She just said her mother had passed and that she was dead and that she needed some help. She was not all bloody, she was drunk."

Martinez said Carol Hatley was so drunk she helped take her home until paramedics arrived. Carol Hatley never mentioned allegedly hurting her mother except for one alleged instance.

"Right before I brought her home she said, 'Oh it was so bloody,' I said, 'What was so bloody?' And she said, 'It was so bloody,'" said Martinez.

Phoenix police said they found trash bags in the home that were apparently to be used to dispose the body.

The victim was the original homeowner and lived there since 1972.

"The family is telling us about a history of domestic incidents involving the mother and the daughter," Crump said. "We're also learning about alcohol and prescription drug abuse."

Melanie Hatley was Deborah Hatley's daughter-in-law until a few months ago. She tells us Deborah Hatley had great love for her children and was a wonderful lady.

Melanie Hatley said, "She had that Southern charm. Uh, great sense of humor, very kind, very loving ... she adored her children, absolutely adored her children."
