Spray paint marks the spot where officials found the head of James Byrd, a 49-year-old black man,
along Huff Creek Road near Jasper, Texas. Byrd was tied to a truck and dragged to his death
along the rural East Texas road in the early morning hours of June 7, 1998.

 

 

The accomplices

 

John William King  was found guilty and sentenced to death for his role
in Byrd's kidnapping and murder.

 

 

Shawn Allen Berry was spared the death penalty and given a life sentence in prison.
