Fourteen Year Old Will Be Tried as Adult

CrimeSceneBlog.com

2nd January 2006

Demetrius D. Carey, a 14-year-old student at Westview Middle School near Opa-locka, was arrested on Decemeber 30, 2005 for the murder of Elena Carrasco.

Authorities believe that Carey follow the 56-year old woman from Sedano’s Supermarket in West Hollywood to her apartment. Surveillance footage showed a young man on a bicycle pull up to the apartment building and enter. Witnesses later saw a young male pedal away from the same building a few moments later. Those witnesses led investigators to Demetrius Carey.

Police believe that after entering the apartment he attempted to rob Carrasco and when she fought back he shot her once in the stomach. He then took several small items from her rooms and left. Upon searching the location where Carey had been staying they found articles from the victim’s apartment.

Court records show that he was arrested in January for bringing a gun to school but there is no notice of how this case was resolved. Prosecutors intend to try the 14-year-old Carey as an adult in the murder and armed robbery of Carrasco.

Teen Charged In Woman's Death To Stand Trial

16-Year-Old Accused Of Robbing, Fatally Shooting Woman Outside Her Home

JustNews.com

Monday, May 19, 2008

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a 16-year-old accused of robbing and killing a Hollywood woman outside her apartment in 2005.

Demetrius Carey is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Elena Carrasco. He sat shackled and handcuffed, holding a Bible in court.

Detectives said Carey was 14 years old when he robbed and fatally shot Carrasco in front of her Hollywood home Dec. 18, 2005.

"It doesn't seem like 2-½ years," said Carrasco's stepson, Adolfo Carrasco Jr.

Carrasco's family said the 56-year-old was returning from church and had stopped off at a grocery store when she was killed before entering her apartment. Police said surveillance video and other evidence led them to charge Carey in connection with her death.

Adolfo Carrasco Jr. said it would be difficult to be in the same room with the teenager accused of killing his stepmother.

"We have not seen this teenager," he said. "The face-to-face will come Tuesday when the trial, hopefully, will start."

Opening statements are expected to begin Tuesday. If Carey is convicted, he will likely be sentenced to life in prison because of his age.

Seventeen-year-old gets life in slaying

A Broward youth, accused of killing a Hollywood woman in cold blood when he was 14, was sentenced Monday to life in prison. Broward Circuit Judge John Murphy III listened to an hour of pleas for mercy from the family of Demetrius Carey, now 17, before passing sentence.

Young killer draws Fla. life sentence

July 1, 2008

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 1 (UPI) -- A Florida judge departed upward from sentencing guidelines and imposed a life sentence on a 17-year-old youth convicted of second-degree murder.

The jury in the case of Demetrius Carey, aged 14 at the time of the 2005 slaying of Elena Carrasco, 56, in Hollywood, Fla., reduced his criminal liability from first-degree murder to second-degree murder without a deadly weapon, apparently believing his defense that someone else shot and killed Carrasco. But Broward Circuit Judge John Murphy imposed a sentence usually reserved for first-degree murder anyway, the Miami Herald reported Monday.

''This is just as surprising and disappointing as the jury's verdict,'' Johnny McCray Jr., Carey's attorney, told the Herald. "What this says to me is the judge didn't agree with the jury.''

Prosecutors said Carrasco was shot to death on her front steps as she was returning from a grocery store and contended that Carey was the trigger man. McCray argued that while Carey may have known who committed the murder, he didn't pull the trigger.

Carey could have received the minimum of 22 years in prison from the judge. Two of Carrasco's family members asked him to put Carey in prison permanently, the newspaper said.
