Guilty Plea in 5 Fire Deaths

A Springfield youth pleaded guilty today to murder
and arson in connection with a December 1985 fire that killed his former
girlfriend and four members of her family.
Clarence Carter, 18 years old, was sentenced by Judge
Harry Elam in Hampden Superior Court to a mandatory term of life in
prison for murder and to 14 to 15 years each for separate counts of
arson and burglary, with the sentences to run concurrently.
