DNA Evidence Links Suspect To 1988 Slaying

HOUSTON -- An inmate on death row was named as a suspect in a 20-year-old murder case, police told KPRC Local 2 Wednesday.

Houston police identified Travis D. Green, 38, as a suspect in the sexual assault and slaying of Margaret McGinnis, 82, in her home on the 1800 block of Crocker Street.

Green is currently an inmate at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas prison system.

McGinnis was found sexually assaulted and strangled on the floor of her bedroom on July 13, 1988, investigators said.

Police said the attacker came into the house through the bedroom window and barricaded the door from the inside.

A lack of witnesses or leads left the case unsolved.

In August 2006, the HPD Homicide Division's Cold Case Squad reopened the case and sent evidence from McGinnis' autopsy to a lab for analysis, investigators said.

Police said DNA evidence found during the autopsy matched that of Green.

Green is currently awaiting execution on death row for the 1999 sexual assault and murder of a 19-year-old woman.

Prosecutors said that due to his current sentence, no additional charges will be filed against Green at this time.
