There are people all over the world who face things worse than death on a daily basis, and in that sense I consider myself lucky.

I cannot find the words to express the sadness I feel for bringing this hurt and pain on my loved ones.

God bless you all.

Joe Fedelfido Gonzales was executed September 18, 1996, by lethal injection after spending only eight months on death row. Gonzales pleaded guilty to killing William J. Veader in 1992. By waiving all rights to appeal, Gonzales spent less time on death row than any previously executed Texas inmate. Veader, 50, was killed by a single shot to the head in his rental home in Amarillo in 1992.

Gonzales was the 107th person to be executed in Texas since the death penalty was reinstated in 1982. Although the Legislature enacted a law to speed up the appeals process in death penalty cases, the process has been delayed by a lack of money to pay lawyers appointed to represent death penalty inmates.
