Sentenced: Feb. 22, 1985, age 49

Residence: Inglewood

Crime: Murder

Date of crime: June 5, 1982

Location: Sun Valley

Victims: Charles Rambert, 31, and Patricia Khan, 30

Status: Federal habeas proceedings pending in U.S. District Court

Embroiled in a rent dispute with his tenants at a home he owned in Sun Valley, the Inglewood landlord ordered them to move out.

When Rambert and Khan refused and told Jones he would have to evict them, Jones let himself into house and blasted them with a 12-gauge shotgun as they slept.

Defense attorneys tried to show Jones was mentally ill. The tactic could have spared him from the death penalty, but Jones would not cooperate with them.

Jones, one attorney said, “doesn’t like anybody.”

“He won’t talk to us (prosecutors) and he won’t talk to them (defense lawyers). He’s just a confrontational guy.”
