July 29, 2005

A RUSSIAN man who had been living in a forest dug-out in the Siberian region of Altai has gone on trial for killing as many as 18 people, ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

Valery Kopylov never returned home after serving a prison sentence for unspecified crimes, but went into the forest and dug himself a shelter, the court in the regional capital Barnaul heard.

Police believe he then went on a killing spree, murdering 12 people nearby and another six in other areas, ITAR-TASS reported.

Many of the victims were homeless, and their identities remained unknown.

Kopylov allegedly told a woman living with him about the killings, and she then went to the police.

He could face a life prison sentence if found guilty.
