On January 31, 1987, Medrano was
at a federal correctional halfway house in Tucson.
After obtaining a weekend pass,
Medrano spent the evening drinking at several nightclubs. Sometime after
midnight, he drove to the home of Patricia Pedrin and parked in the
driveway. Medrano knew Ms. Pedrin because he had served time in prison
with her husband.
Medrano honked the horn several
times until Ms. Pedrin opened the door and let him in the house. Once
inside, Medrano raped Ms. Pedrin and stabbed her over 20 times with a
knife. Around 8:00 a.m. Ms. Pedrin's children found their mother's body
lying on the floor in a pool of blood.
