State of Kansas v. Dennis Rader

August 17-18, 2005

  • The sentencing hearing for Dennis Rader was held and resulted in Judge Gregory Waller imposing ten life sentences to run consecutively. Judge Waller also imposed the "Hard 40" for the murder of Dolores Davis. Dennis Rader was transported to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections where he will be required to serve 175 years before parole eligibility.

August 11, 2005

  • A Motion to Compel Discovery was filed by the State and heard by Judge Richard Ballinger on August 10, 2005. Judge Ballinger sustained the motion.

June 27, 2005

  • Dennis Rader entered guilty pleas to 10 counts of first degree murder today. He waived his right to a jury deciding the aggravating circumstances for the Hard 40 sentence. The State rejected his waiver of evidence to support the aggravating circumstances for the Hard 40 sentence. Judge Gregory Waller will hear that issue at the beginning of the sentencing proceeding scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. on August 17, 2005. Judge Gregory Waller ordered a Pre-sentence Investigation to be completed and will sentence Dennis Rader for all of the murder convictions at the sentencing hearing.

May 6, 2005

  • The defense filed a motion for discovery and requested a hearing today at 9:30. The defendant waived a full and fair hearing. The state and the defendant agreed that the motion for discovery should only be sustained as to discovery and inspection that is required by Kansas Statute K.S.A. 22-3212 and case law, and that the defendant's motion should be overruled as to any definitions, discovery and inspection that go beyond established law.

May 3, 2005

  • Dennis Rader stood mute at his arraignment today, Judge Waller entered a not guilty plea on his behalf and set the jury trial on June 27, 2005. District Attorney Nola Foulston served the Notice of Intent to Request Separate Sentencing Proceeding for the "Hard 40" for the murder of Dolores "Dee" Davis on the defendant and counsel.

April 19, 2005

  • Dennis L. Rader waived his right to preliminary hearing in court this morning. Judge Waller granted his attorney's request that his arraignment be set on May 3, 2005, at 9:00 a.m.

March 15, 2005

  • District Attorney Nola Tedesco Foulston responds to public inquiry today regarding the status of evidence taken during the investigation of the homicides of Joseph Otero, Julie Otero, Josephine Otero, Joseph Otero, Jr., Kathryn Bright, Shirley Vian, Nancy Fox, Marine Hedge, Vicki Wegerle and Dolores Davis.

March 10, 2005

  • The preliminary hearing for State of Kansas vs. Dennis L. Rader has been continued from March 15, 2005 to April 19, 2005 at 9:00 a.m. at the request of the defense.  

March 1, 2005

  • Dennis L. Rader had his first appearance in court today and was charged with ten counts of 1st degree premeditated murder. The public defender's office was appointed to represent him. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 15, 2005 at 9:00 a.m. He is being held in the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility in lieu of $10,000,000 bail.

February 28, 2005

  • The first appearance for Dennis Rader has been scheduled for Tuesday, March 1st, at 11:00 a.m. All media requests for the hearing must be coordinated through the Court's Media Coordinator. The charging document will be available on our website late tomorrow.

  • The first appearance for Dennis Rader will be held on Tuesday, March 1st. It is expected that this will not be at 3:00. The specific time will be announced.

  • Dennis L. Rader has been arrested and is being held on $10,000,000 probable cause bond. Formal charges are expected this week. Once Mr. Rader has made a first appearance in this case, the charging document will be available on this site.
